Simple tips to reduce damp and mould

Everyday actions can create moisture in your home. These tips can help reduce condensation and prevent mould:

  • Wipe down surfaces
Remove condensation from windowsills and tiles with a dry cloth, wringing it out regularly.

  • Dry clothes carefully
If possible, dry clothes outside. If drying indoors, use a rack in a cool room with a window open and the door closed.

  • Reduce bathroom moisture
Turn on cold water first, then add hot to reduce steam. Use an extractor fan or open a window, and wipe down tiles after bathing. Keep the bathroom door closed.

  • Keep heating on low
Maintain a low level of heat in all rooms during the day. Avoid short bursts of high heat, which can worsen condensation.

  • Open windows briefly
Let fresh air in for a few minutes each day. Open doors while airing rooms to improve airflow. If safe, keep a bedroom window slightly open at night.
