What should I do if one of my water pipes burst?

2 min read

If a pipe in your home bursts, switch off the water to your home at the mains stop tap and call us on 0800 432 0077 as soon as possible.

  1. If a pipe in your home bursts, switch off the water to your home at the mains stop tap and call us on 0800 432 0077 as soon as possible.

    • Under the kitchen sink

    • In your kitchen cupboards

    • Under the stairs

    • Near your front and back doors

    • In the garage.

  2. There will also usually be a stop tap located outside your building that allows the water company to switch the water off in an emergency.

  3. Call us as soon as possible to tell us about the burst pipe. If you can't find the stop tap, we can help you locate it.

  4. Turn on all the cold water taps to drain any remaining water from the system. (Don't turn on the hot water taps as this can damage the system.)

  5. Wrap a cloth tightly around the leaking pipes, and put a bucket under the pipe if possible

  6. Turn off the boiler and immersion heater. (You can still use your gas fire, if you have one.)

  7. Turn off electricity at the mains switch in case water has touched the electrics. You'll need to get a qualified electrician to check the whole system before turning the supply back on.

We'll get someone over to you as soon as possible. It may take a couple of visits to complete the repairs that are needed.
