Domestic abuse support at the heart of maternity care

30 October 2025 - News
October marks Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, and at A2Dominion, we’re shining a light on the vital work our Hospital Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA), Sarah*, who is based in the maternity ward at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Sarah is there for women during pregnancy and childbirth. She offers a lifeline to those experiencing domestic abuse, helping them feel safe, heard and supported.

Sarah said: “Pregnancy can be a worrying time. Abuse can start or get worse during pregnancy, and that can leave women feeling unsafe and unsure of what to do next.

“When I speak to women in the maternity unit, I am open and honest about how I can help.  That might mean finding safe accommodation, getting legal advice, counselling, housing support or making a safety plan. If someone needs to leave, I can support them to access the appropriate services to do so safely.”

Last year, we supported 48 women through our domestic abuse service at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Jane Clarges, Head of Operations at A2Dominion, said: “Having a dedicated IDVA in the hospital allows us to support women at a critical moment, when they may be frightened, vulnerable and unsure where to turn.

“Sarah’s support is immediate, compassionate and often life-saving. Her presence in our team is invaluable, and we know it makes a real difference to the lives of women we help.”
