How can I protect my home from flooding?

3 min read

We understand how worrying flooding can be, and we’re here to help you feel prepared and supported.

Here’s what you can do to protect your home and belongings:

Check your flood risk

Check your flood risk by entering your postcode here: gov.uk/check-flood-risk. If your area is medium or high risk, sign up for flood alerts so you can act quickly.

If you live in what is a high-risk area and are unsure of how to do this and would like assistance or advice, then please get in touch with us.

Make sure you have contents insurance

A2Dominion insures the building, but not your personal items. Water damage to your belongings won’t be covered unless you have your own contents insurance.

How will the government share information about flood risks?

For serious flood alerts, the UK Government uses its Emergency Alerts system to send loud, siren-like notifications directly to mobile phones in affected areas. These alerts are based on your location and don’t require you to sign up or enable location services. You can find out more on the government website

If a flood alert is issued:

  • Turn off electricity, gas and water supplies. If you live in a high flood risk area and you're not sure how to safely turn off your gas, electricity or water supplies, please contact us and we’ll guide you through what to do.

  • Move valuables upstairs or out of the home if possible and wrap items in waterproof bags.

  • Tie down large furniture to prevent damage.

  • Block sinks and baths with weighted plugs to stop water coming in.

  • Take photos of your home and belongings before the flood, this helps with insurance claims.

After a flood:

  • Only enter your home when it’s safe. Avoid standing water, it may hide sharp objects or sewage.

  • Please call us on 0800 432 0077 to report the issue straight away.

  • Contact your insurer and document everything, including photos, videos and receipts.

  • Ventilate your home and use fans or a dehumidifier to dry out walls and prevent damp or mould.

If you rent a home from us our team will work with you to recover and make your home safe again.

What if I am a leaseholder or shared owner?

Each year we send leaseholders and shared owners a summary of their building insurance policy, which now factors in flood risk, location, and property type. This means if the building structure is damaged by flooding, the insurance may cover repairs to communal areas and the building. Please contact us for further information.
