Improving the energy efficiency and sustainability of homes

16 February 2026 - News
We regularly review how the homes and neighbourhoods we manage perform in areas such as energy efficiency, heating, water use and waste.

This helps us understand where homes are performing well and where improvements are needed.

We use an independent environmental assessment carried out by SHIFT to support this work. This assessment provides evidence to help us prioritise investment and focus on changes that will have the greatest impact for residents.

Our most recent assessment shows a 9% improvement on last year, with an overall Silver rating.

Conan McKinley, Asset Director at A2Dominion, said: “The SHIFT Silver accreditation shows the real progress we’re making, but it also sets out clearly where we need to do more.

“The report's findings will help us focus our investment on the things that matter most to our residents -  warmer, more efficient homes, reliable heating, reduced waste, and neighbourhoods that feel clean and cared for.

“To help achieve this we’re setting up a dedicated sustainability team to drive this work forwards and we’re committed to using this assessment to guide practical improvements that support comfort, affordability and a more sustainable future for our communities.”

Improving the energy performance of homes

We are developing long-term plans to bring all our homes up to at least an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) C rating by 2030, starting with the homes that need the most improvement.

EPCs tell you how energy efficient a building is, rating a home from A (very efficient) to G (inefficient). They’ll tell you how costly it will be to heat and light your property, and what its CO2 emissions are likely to be.

We’re also making changes for customers living in buildings with shared or communal heating systems. This includes better monitoring to help us spot issues more quickly and upgrading the poorest-performing systems and homes.

Reducing water use

A2Dominion homes currently use an average of 141.97 litres of water per person per day. The Government’s long-term target is 110 litres per person by 2050, and we are working towards this by:

  • installing more efficient taps, showers and toilets during kitchen and bathroom upgrades

  • improving records of water‑saving features in each home

  • updating our specifications for new fixtures and fittings

  • installing rainwater harvesting systems where suitable.

Reducing waste and tackling fly‑tipping

The SHIFT report is also helping us make improvements to reduce waste. Measures include introducing built‑in recycling bins in new kitchens and giving customers clearer guidance on what can be recycled.

More sustainability advice for customers

Over the coming months, we’ll be offering more practical advice and support to help customers save energy and water, reduce waste and cut household costs. This will include new help articles and regular tips on sustainable living.
