Supported housing tenants - What are my rights and responsibilities as a tenant?

2 min read

Your rights and responsibilities are set out in your lease or tenancy agreement. There are some general rights and responsibilities that vary depending on what type of tenant you are.

Although tenancy agreements are all slightly different, they all give you the right to:

  • Live in your home in peace and quiet

  • Access your home, including any shared areas, at all times

  • Stay in your home as long as you don't break the conditions of the agreement

You must:

  • Keep your home clean and redecorate when necessary

  • Pay your rent and any other charges set out in your tenancy agreement, including service charges (If you're having trouble keeping up with payments, we might be able to help.)

  • Allow us or our representatives to enter, inspect or repair your home

  • Keep your home free from vermin, such as mice and cockroaches

  • Keep your garden neat and tidy

  • Give the government the information they need if you claim Housing Benefit or Universal Credit.

  • Arrange your own contents insurance if you want to protect your possessions

You're responsible for how your family and visitors behave. We want you and everyone around you to enjoy your homes, so you, your family and your visitors must not:

  • Use your home or any shared area for illegal activities

  • Store anything other than a vehicle in your garage

  • Damage or graffiti the property

  • Run a business from your home without our permission

  • Leave things in shared areas as this causes a fire risk

  • Put up structures such as sheds or garages without our permission

  • Park anywhere on your property, except in defined parking areas

  • Do major car repairs or park an unroadworthy vehicle around your home or on the road

  • Cause a nuisance, harass or disturb other people

  • Throw anything from a window, block or balcony

  • Harass or mentally, emotionally, sexually or financially abuse anyone who lives with you. This is domestic abuse.

What happens if I break the terms of my tenancy?
