Are your belongings insured?

Your home

Did you know that A2Dominion arranges the insurance for the building in which you live, but we don’t insure your personal belongings and home contents?

Contents insurance is designed to help protect your belongings. No matter how careful you are, there’s always a risk that your belongings could be broken, damaged or stolen.

To help you decide whether home contents insurance is right for you, we’ve teamed up with Thistle Tenant Risks, and Great Lakes Insurance UK Limited who provide the My Home Contents Insurance scheme.

The policy covers the contents and personal belongings against loss or damage and all A2Dominion customers* are eligible to apply.

This includes up to your sums insured values:

  • Fire - if your furnishings are damaged or destroyed in a fire, the insurance covers the cost to repair or replace damaged items. This excludes damage caused by scorching, melting or warping unless accompanied by flames.
  • Theft - if your mobile phone, laptop, flat screen TV, or jewellery (limits apply) are stolen when your home is burgled, you can replace them. You must report any incident to the police as soon as possible.
  • Flood, excluding any loss or damage in cellars and basements, and other damage such as malicious damage (which does not apply if your home has been unoccupied for more than 60 days in a row.)

These are just some of the features, limits and exclusions of the policy. For more information about our policy, please refer to the insurance product information document (IPID) and policy wording, which is available upon request.

Mark Gilbert, A2Dominion’s Head of Risk and Insurance, says “People often forget about insurance, until something goes wrong like a leak or theft and you need to replace your belongings, which could be very costly. Your insurance cover can be tailored to how much you want to protect so that you have the right level of cover for your home.

"A2Dominon is responsible for buildings insurance but you’ll need to arrange to have the belongings you own protected. Taking out contents insurance is a personal choice. But it could really help in unpredictable circumstances.”

How having contents insurance helped a customer

One customer came home one day to find water coming through the ceiling in her kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. The carpets in her bedroom and lounge were saturated, her mattress was soaking wet and her kitchen was flooded.

The customer said “my kettle and toaster were floating in the kitchen and the air fryer had filled with water. I had to empty the kitchen cupboards to dry them and throw out all of my dry and packaged food. My fridge freezer had water running down the back.”

Fortunately, the customer had a home contents insurance policy which meant she could claim for the damaged items which were her responsibility, and the claim was settled within 4 weeks.
