Keeping you safe this Bonfire Night

15 October 2024 - Home
With 5 November just around the corner, many of us look forward to Bonfire Night and lighting fireworks. But it’s important to stay safe and recognise the impact bonfires, fireworks and gatherings can have on your neighbours. Here are a few things to keep in mind while celebrating.

Bonfires and fireworks in communal areas

We know bonfires are a big part of the night and there are many organised events where you can go to see a bonfire safely.

Your tenancy agreement states you should not light a bonfire or set off fireworks in communal areas. Deliberate fires and fireworks in your garden could put unnecessary strain on the emergency services and can easily endanger you, your family and your neighbours’ lives and homes.

What if I have a private garden that isn’t shared?

Firework displays

If you have your own property and private garden, which is not a communal area, and you’re planning on hosting a firework display yourself, or going to a smaller event with friends or family, it’s important to take extra care.

Read these tips for staying safe from the London Fire Brigade:

  • Only buy fireworks which carry the CE mark, keep them in a closed box and use them one at a time

  • Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary

  • Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks

  • Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them

  • Never return to a firework once it’s been lit

  • Under no circumstances set off fireworks on a balcony

  • If you’re having your own fireworks display, plan it so the event is safe and enjoyable, and ensure it finishes before 11pm.

Bonfires

If you are an A2Dominion resident who has their own private garden, you are not permitted to have a bonfire. This is to ensure the safety of you and your neighbours.
