Elmsbrook at NW Bicester makes progress to deliver on its green credentials

b2baugust2016-elmsbrook2 Marking the opening of the new combined heat and power energy centre at Elmsbrook.

A2Dominion launched a new energy plant at Elmsbrook, NW Bicester, the first of many green benefits being rolled out across the new development.

Andrea Leadsom, then Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, and Victoria Prentis, MP for North Oxfordshire, joined A2Dominion Group Chief Executive, Darrell Mercer, to mark the opening of a new combined heat and power (CHP) energy centre at Elmsbrook, the first of several planned for the North West Bicester eco-town.

The CHP plant is one of many sustainable features incorporated into the scheme to improve energy saving and efficiency for the end user, making Elmsbrook the largest true zero-carbon development in the UK.

Elmsbrook will deliver 393 true zero-carbon homes, as part of the wider masterplan for 6,000 new eco-homes in Bicester. Phase one delivered 91 new homes and the first residents moved in April, this year.

Phase two of Elmsbrook, which will deliver a further 72 homes including 64 private sale and eight affordable rent, will launch in early 2017. There has already been lots of positive interest from the public looking to be part of the UK’s first true zero-carbon community.

Sustainable transport

Other highlights from Elmsbrook include Grayline Coaches introducing its new low emissions zone compliant bus service, providing residents with an environmentally friendly means of transport between Elmsbrook and Bicester town centre.

The bus service is just one of the alternative modes of travel introduced by A2Dominion to minimise C02 emissions; others include a free Brompton Bike Loan Scheme, an Electric Car Club managed by E Car and subsidised electric vehicles for community champions.

Community fun day

A2Dominion held its annual Bicester ‘Bike and Family Fun Day’, attracting approximately 300 local residents and budding cyclists. The event, which promotes cycling amongst the community, was delivered in partnership with, Grassroots Bicester, Legacy Leisure at Bicester Leisure Centre, Bicester Millennium Cycle Club, Bioregional, Cherwell District Council, National Cycling Charity CTC, Earthline, and Bicester Green.

Industry recognition

The scheme has also received industry recognition for its eco-credentials, having recently won gold in the Sustainability Award at the Constructing Excellence Awards 2016, and bronze in the Eco-Living Award at the London Evening Standard New Homes Awards 2016.
